The initial assessment allows the physiotherapist to identify the injured tissues and the factors that have contributed to the injury/problem. It will include taking a detailed history of the injury/problem, a physical examination (looking at posture/alignment and seeing how your injured body parts move and doing some diagnostic tests in order to identify the structures at fault), and treatment planning to ensure you get the best treatment for your injury/problem.
The initial assessment will last for one hour, most other return appointments will last 45 minutes. Please try and arrive 5 minutes before your appointment so we can register you and you can make the most out of your treatment time.
On completion of the initial assessment, you will be given an estimate of how many therapy session you will need.
Please ensure that you wear loose comfortable clothing in order for the physiotherapist to accurately assess your movements. If you have a lower limb injury, it would be recommended that you bring some shorts to your appointment.
It would be useful to bring a list of any medication you are using.
In most cases you will received hands on physiotherapy treatment. After a thorough examination, your physiotherapist will decide on the best course of treatment for you.
It is important to build on the improvement that you have made during your treatment sessions, so your physiotherapist may provide you with some exercises to do at home. However, this will depend on your individual injury/problem and will only be given if appropriate.
